The budget U.S. carrier, Spirit Airlines, which is based out of Miramar, Florida, recently announced that it is planning to build a 126,000 square foot maintenance facility a the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The hanger is estimated to cost $31.7 million and should employ approximately 84 individuals. Indirectly, this venture should create 150 other jobs as well. The new jobs are rumored to have an hourly pay rate of $35/hour.

The program has been awarded a $1 million grant by the Michigan Business Development Program. Additionally, the city of Romulus will support the new project with a property tax abatement. A form of subsidy which will reduce the amount of property taxes that Spirit will have to pay the city.

Construction of the new hanger will begin in the fall of this year.
