Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men keep delaying flights to/from TLV

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men keep delaying flightsA Delta Airlines flight from New York’s JFK Airport to Tel Aviv’s TLV Airport was delayed by half an hour last week after a group of male ultra-Orthodox Jewish passengers refused to sit next to female passengers, similar incidents also occurred in September and October of this year.

At least one of the Jewish men were seated between two women, the women who seemed to disturb the men refused to move claiming the men were discriminating against them. Please note that ultra-Orthodox Jews cannot touch members of the opposite sex unless they are close relatives or a spouse.

The crew working the Delta flight out of JFK Airport tried to find seats for the men, but many passengers refused to switch. The incident took place aboard Delta flight #468 on December 20, 2014. One male passenger eventually moved to accommodate the Jewish men and get the flight going.

According to The Independent, on the eve of the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashana in October, another JFK-TLV fliight was delayed by an hour after a group of Haredim Jewish men refused to sit next to women.

This seems to be a big problem on El Al flights because there is a petition on Change.org asking the airline to stop discriminating against women on their flights. El Al is the national carrier for the State of Israel.

Delta has decided to not comment on the situation.

My opinion: These gentlemen should know better, they should know that flying is not limited to one gender, religion, or country of origin. If you only want to sit by male passengers then either a) book an entire row or b) pay a few extra bucks and reserve a better seat with your fellow male colleagues. Don’t expect that the rest of the passengers have to accommodate you, they paid just as much as you did (relatively). Delta should have ejected the men for disrupting a flight.
