Doggy Bag: Beagle Sniffs Out Pig Head in Luggage at Atlanta Airport

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is responsible for what comes into the country as visitors enter or as citizens return home.  They have a tendency to find some very interesting “imports” in people’s luggage, including 13 pounds of genitals and even animal brains.  Last week, a CBP K9 officer named Hardy detected a roasted pig head  in the baggage of a traveler from Ecuador.

The discovery was made by none other than a cute beagle who serves as a k9 agricultural specialist for CPB.  The CBP website describes Hardy as, “a six-year old rescued Beagle.”  “Hardy joined CBP here at ATL in 2015 after completing training with U.S. Department of Agriculture at their National Detectors Dog Training Center in Newnan, GA.”  A picture of Hardy is below.

As a reminder, CBP has limitations on food items that can be brought into the United States.  Their website reminds visitors and citizens alike that, “Pork and pork products from other continents are prohibited from entry into the U.S. to prevent the potential introduction of foreign animal diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, Classical Swine Fever, and Swine Vesicular Disease. When entering into the U.S. every fruit, vegetable or food products must be declared to a CBP agriculture specialist or CBP officer and must be presented for inspection – regardless of origin.”
