Here’s Where Americans Are Looking To Travel After Quarantine

There’s a lot of discussion of when the right time to travel is, as stay-at-home orders are lifted.  Travel is obviously on the minds of some Americans.  A recent survey found that many Americans plan on staying domestic and close to home, preferring driving over planes.  But a survey by Expedia explored searches by Americans to gauge where they are looking to travel between July and December.

Top Flight Searches

  1. Orlando, Florida
  2. Honolulu, Hawaii
  3. Las Vegas, Nevada
  4. Miami, Florida
  5. Cancun, Mexico
  6. Maui, Hawaii
  7. London, England
  8. Los Angeles, California
  9. Denver, Colorado
  10. San Juan, Puerto Rico

For the top three destinations:  Keep in mind Disney World is still not open, but they recently announced a reopening plan for Disney Springs starting May 20.  Be careful about planning a trip to Hawaii.  You may end up in hotel house arrest or with a tracking device as long as its draconian quarantine policies are in place.  Casinos remain closed, but Wynn Resorts’ CEO recently said he hopes they’ll be open by Memorial Day.

Travel Domestic or to Mexico

Eighty percent of searches for the same time period were for domestic destinations, showing similar results to the recent survey that found Americans plan on exploring the U.S. first.  But for those who looked to travel internationally, Cancun is the most searched for flights.  Americans show a strong preference for travel to Mexico, for those who search for international destinations.  That’s not entirely shocking given 1) proximity to the U.S. and 2) the relaxing, beach vibe those destinations offer.

Naturally, this is only based on searches so it’s hard to know how many people actually plan on booking these trips.  There could be a factor to consider that people are merely board and want to plan travel so they are looking these destinations up.  But it’s similar to other surveys int that it definitely seems Americans want to explore America first.

Bottom Line

The Expedia survey found the top four searches from Americans were domestic destinations.  That’s in keeping with earlier surveys that try to gauge where Americans plan to travel first.  It’s likely family will be an important consideration for travel plans, as people have been locked up separated by family for some time.
