Airport Worker Destroys a KLM $35 Million Boeing 747 Engine in Tarmac Accident

Surely if you’ve ever driven, you know it’s a good thing to have insurance.  Well, hopefully KLM paid its most recent insurance bill because it’s going to need it.  An airport worker destroyed one of the four engines of a KLM Boeing 747 when he hit a stand on the tarmac.  The aircraft was being towed into a parking bay at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at the time of the incident.

As you can see, the driver jerks the tow within seconds of the engine slamming into the platform.  The Daily Mail reports that the plane is now not functional and that it will be out of commission until they can get a new engine.  That will come at a hefty price tag for the airline.  The airline estimates that replacing the engine will cost anywhere between $12 million and $35 million.  No passengers or crew members were onboard the aircraft when the accident occurred.

The airline does have a reserve 747 that it is going to use to replace the current the damaged one.  KLM is working on phasing out the “Queen of the Skies” aircraft and replacing it with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (a sad tale for those of us who love the 747!).
