Barclays Extends Expiration Dates On Companion Certificates

We recently wrote about our whether Barclays would extend expiration dates for companion certificates.  We said at the time that while we wouldn’t be upset if they didn’t, it would be nice if they did.  Well, good news!  According to View From the Wing, Barclays is extending expiration dates on American Airlines companion certificates.

View From the Wing reports:

Existing AAdvantage Aviator Red, Silver and Business cardmembers who hold a companion certificate with an expiration date between 3/31/2020 and 5/31/2021 will be extended through 06/30/21.

The announcement came the same day that Citi announced a $225 credit on their AAdvantage Executive Card.  They also announced extensions on Citi Companion certificates and Flight Discounts.  Overall, we think the $225 credit is a great deal since Admirals Clubs have largely been inaccessible over the past couple of months due to coronavirus.

This is actually a big help to me since I have a companion certificate that expires in November.  I’m still not entirely sure where I want to use it for.  But the companion pass is a nice benefit of the card.

With the companion pass earned after $20,000 in spend on the Silver Aviator, you get two companion tickets for $99 per person, plus taxes and fees.  Of course, there are some blackout dates and tickets are not eligible for upgrades.  But it’s an incredible way to take a trip with friends or family at a discounted rate.  My husband and I have used it before to travel together and bring along a friend.

Bottom Line

Barclays is extending companion certificate expirations, which is good news for those of us that have them!  I still haven’t decided where I’m going to use mine before it expires, but I definitely look forward to using it to get away at some point.  Given how coronavirus has taught me a lot about the importance of domestic travel, this will be helpful.

Where do you plan on using your companion certificate?
