Beginning on May 1, 2017, American Airlines will begin to offer meals in the Main Cabin on flights in both directions between Los Angeles and New York, and between San Francisco and New York.

“Depending on the time of day, customers will be offered a continental breakfast or a boxed meal with a sandwich wrap, kettle chips and dessert. The menu also includes a vegetarian option and a fruit and cheese plate.”

This move isn’t a gesture of goodwill, though. American is offering this enhancement simply because Delta has recently announced the same enhancement and both airlines compete heavily on trans-continental flights between NYC and LAX/SFO.

American operates trans-continental flights on their signature A321T aircraft which offers three separate cabins, first class, business class, and main cabin (coach). Both the first class and business class cabins offer fully lie-flat seats.
