When Did You First Join a Frequent Flyer Program? & Win a Gift card
Last night while eating a well-earned brownie with vanilla ice-cream and whip cream, I was looking through old emails dating back to around 2006.
During that process, I came across what seems to be the first frequent flyer program that I had signed up for. It looks like I signed up for Delta Airlines Skymiles program back in February 2010. I also joined Hilton HHonors in 2010. I was nineteen at the time, I know I’m fairly young in relation to my readers, which isn’t a bad thing. Google Analytics says that my readers are an average of 25-34 years old, I know that I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be a young traveler and hold elite status with two major airlines. Though, I am getting wiser err… older and it does suck!
And of course, I am also lucky to be a member of the BoardingArea network, which includes you, the reader.
I used to fly exclusively Delta, but after moving to Washington, D.C. in 2012 it became easier to fly American between DCA and MIA. The layovers in Atlanta wasted valuable family-bonding time.
I joined the AAdvantage program in December of 2012, I wasn’t a fan of American back then, their flight attendants and employees were always sort of snarky and rude. Some of that still lingers but I guess it’s better now.
Anyway. When did you first join a frequent flyer program?
Joined Southwest Rapid Rewards in 1993. Seemed a good deal at the time to get status, a seat in first class with free drinks and meals, and lounge access.
I first joined Delta Skymiles when I was in college in 2007.
I probably first joined in 2000, but never redeemed miles or paid attention until 2012.
How do we enter to win the gift card 😉
Glad you started to redeem them! You automatically enter to win the gift card when you comment, so you’re already signed up! The winner will be announced Monday and will receive an email too. Good luck and thanks for reading!
I joined AAdvantage when it started. 1984 I think.
Wow! That’s pretty amazing, I love to hear about long time members. I registered my little brother up, hopefully (but I doubt it) the programs will be good in 9 more years!
Joined delta in 2009.
I first entered the frequent flyer world in 2007. It was for Jet Airways and a cute FA convinced me to join!
I joined the Northwest WorldPerks program back in the 90’s – miles were sooo easy to redeem back then!
And now…it is a mission and a half to redeem!
The first time was when I joined United Mileage Plus while in college in 2006!
I joined UA last year. I’ve never actually flown UA. I’ve stuck to oneworld and skyteam airlines. Though, I will eventually fly UA to see for myself if the horror stories are true.
Delta sometime in the mid-90’s
America West Flightfund – 1988. Alaska Airlines – 2002 Delta – 1988 American – 1988 United – 1988
Joined AAdvantage in 1981. Was one of the very first members. Number is so old that it has only numbers, no letters. Delta in 1982, CO, EA, UA in 1982….Im EXHAUSTED!
I would be too, jeez! 1981, that is really something. You make my join date seem like just yesterday!
Back in the 90s when all my coworkers were crazy about airline miles.
Continental OnePass in 1992 and I still have my card 🙂
Good ole Continental 😛
American shows me at log in that I joined AAdvantage on 1/24/84. But that was the last of the legacy airline enrollments for me. Based near Chicago in 1981, I joined United’s program as soon as as it came out, followed that year with Delta, Northwest and others. When TWA folded-or was taken over by AA, I dodged a bullet as they consolidated the miles into AAdvantage as did Delta did with NW. Those miles have taken me places I’d only dreamed of.
That is pretty cool! Vintage number, I’m sure.
My father signed me up for Aeroplan in 1988 (11 at the time) and I have been a member since. I had my first son last year and instantly signed him up for Aeroplan! Been Hilton Honors for 6 years, SPG since 2007, IHG two years ago and a bunch of other hotel loyalty programs. Also a member of United, Avis First, National, Hertz and Frontier.
Joined united back in the early 2000s in high school, my dad was grooming me for miles greatness eventually!
I joined JetBlue’s TrueBlue back in 2005…when they had “credits” instead of points. The good ol days.
Northwest Worldperks back around 1989 when I started a long distance relationship that is now a 24 year marriage.
Congratulations! I guess distance does make the heart grow fonder.
Korean Air Skypass when I was 18
NWA Worldperks in 1985. Btw how does google know how old we are and why is it telling you?
Hey John, Google uses cookies to track all of that… Google Analytics has a demographics section and it shows the average age of our viewers. It doesn’t tell me one persons age in particular but rather the percentage of all viewers. Most sites use Google Analytics to see what interests people and when/why.
My first program was United in 2005, within a year’s time of finding Flyertalk.
In 2004, with northwest airlines Worldperks. Had about 10000 miles, Redeemed them for a whole set of magazines for the year
I joined in the mid 90’s. I just wish I knew then what I know now about this awesome hobby!
Early 2000s I started joining frequent flyer clubs when I began traveling for work at a new job.
I joined Northwest”s Worldperks program when it first started. So long ago that I don’t remember the year…maybe 1984??
I have a certificate hanging on the wall in my office “ADMIRAL OF THE FLAGSHIP FLEET” Admirals Club,Signed By C.R.Smith Fleet Admiral.2nd day of February 1968.Also DELTA FLYING COLONEL plaque.
Definitely have been a member of Delta’s program since at least some time in the late 1980s. I remember when the transition to SkyMiles happened in 1995 (when expiration was introduced), because my old Frequent Flyer miles had a special status as a result. For many years when I was in college in the late 1990s (yes, that makes me a tad OLDER than your average reader), I had miles in two different buckets.
Delta 2009
I joined Delta Skymiles in 2010 in preparation for my honeymoon.
I joined when I was going abroad and traveling that way I could take advantage. I usually just go with whichever airline is cheapest but found that loyalty can have its perks!
