And The Best Travel Destination For 2019 Is…
…Sri Lanka! That’s according to Lonely Planet, which released it’s list of best travel destinations for 2019. Also notable, Copenhagen, Denmark was named the number one city to visit because of it’s food culture and a design powerhouse. The number one region is Piedmont in Italy, where you can find the home of Leonardo Da Vinci and new UNESCO heritage sites.
The ranking is announced every year by Lonely Planet. The decision is based on a panel of judges that make the determination based on Lonely Planet’s editors, researchers, locals, and influencers.
Lonely Planet Destination Editor Trisha Ping said in a statement releasing the results, “These are the places to experience in 2019. They might be coming into their own, celebrating a once-in-a-lifetime event or simply have been overlooked for too long – whatever the reason, now is the time to plan a trip.”
Copies of the book exploring the list of destinations can be purchased from the Lonely Planet website.
Some Controversy With the Pick
The choice of Sri Lanka is not entirely without controversy. An article in Independent out of the UK raised questions about the choice given recent violence against Muslims in the country and crimes that happen against women in the country, which the UK Home Office warns travelers about before they travel there.
Lonely Planet replied to the controversy saying that the vast majorities of trips to Sri Lanka do not involve such incidents, and that it is typically a great place to visit.
Have you ever been to Sri Lanka? If so, what did you think?
