BREAKING: Multiple People Shot at Fort Lauderdale Airport
Airport officials at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport are reporting that multiple people were shot at the lower baggage claim area.
Local news reports say there was an active shooter call, but by 1pm there was a suspect in custody. The airport has been cleared by gates D4 and D5. Customers are advised to contact their airline to check the status of their flight.
We will update the story through the afternoon as more information becomes available.
UPDATE: 1:42pm
Reports from NBC say that 9 people have been shot and three are dead. The motive for the shooting is not yet known, but officials say that it occurred near Baggage Claim 2.
Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer was at the airport at the time of the shooting and tweeted about the incident:

UPDATE: 4:17pm
CNN is reporting that law enforcement officials have claimed the shooter, Esteban Santiago, flew to Ft. Lauderdale from Alaska, through Canada and is said to have flown on Air Canada. Sources claim that the flew with the weapon in his checked baggage. After retreiving the bag from baggage claim, witnesses claim he went to the bathroom, took the weapon out of the bag, loaded it, and began firing.
